Travel Requirements Based on Pet Type

Carefully read ALL of the requirements related to your pet on this page.

  • This page provides the most recent entry requirements and can change without notice.
  • It is the responsibility of the veterinarian to make sure the pet has met all health requirements of the destination country before issuing a health certificate.
  • Failure to meet the requirements may result in problems gaining certificate endorsement or difficulties upon arrival in the destination country.
  • Health certificates must be legible, accurate, and complete.

An import permit is required for the importation of all pets into the Turks and Caicos Islands.  All imports must come to an official port of entry, and all import conditions attached to a particular commodity must be satisfied before landing clearance is given.  It is the importer’s responsibility to verify the accuracy and completeness of all import conditions before they attempt to import commodities into the Islands.

Commodities without import permits will be returned to the country of origin.

To bring dogs or cats into the Turks and Caicos Islands you will need an import permit and an International Health Certificate.

An International Health Certificate issued by a USDA Accredited Veterinarian and endorsed by APHIS VS is required to travel with dog or cat to the Turks and Caicos Islands.

  • The health certificate must be signed in an ink color other than black
  • The health certificate is valid for 10 days from the date of issue by a USDA-Accredited veterinarian.  The health certificate must then be endorsed by the USDA prior to submission of the import permit application to the Turks and Caicos.

The  import permit (578.16 KB) must be sent to Turks and Caicos Islands Department of Agriculture via email, fax or mail.  Please refer to contact information listed below.

If you wish to apply for multiple-entry and re-entry permits, please contact the Turks and Caicos Department of Agriculture.

Failure to comply with the import permit will result in the animals being refused entry, held in holding, and deported within 48 hours at the owner’s expense or be euthanized without recompense.

The Inspection Unit for Plant and Animal Health requires at least 48 hours’ notice of confirmed arrival date, time, airline/vessel number and the designated port of entry. All relevant documents must accompany all consignments of animals which must be submitted at the port of entry.

In the event that during the course of transporting the animal to the Turks and Caicos Islands, it was trans-shipped via another country and remained there for twenty-four (24) hours and over, a veterinary certificate from the Veterinary Authority or from the Quarantine Officer must be obtained stating that the said animals did not leave the quarantine area, noting the period of time in quarantine and the condition of the animal.

ALERT: If you're traveling with a dog, be aware that the CDC has additional requirements for bringing a dog into the United States. You must follow CDC's requirements, or your dog will not be allowed to enter the United States.

If you are transiting (passing through) the European Union:

If your pet is traveling through (transiting) a country in the European Union (EU) on the way to a third, non-EU country, you will also need a transit health certificate for your pet for the EU. The transit health certificate will be the same as if your pet’s final destination was the EU country. Use the information and steps above under “Travel Requirements Based on Pet Type” to determine which health certificate should be used. View a list of EU countries.
