Travel Requirements Based on Pet Type

- It is the responsibility of the veterinarian to make sure the pet has met all health requirements of the destination country before issuing a health certificate.
- Failure to meet the requirements may result in problems gaining certificate endorsement or difficulties upon arrival in the destination country.
- Health certificates must be legible, accurate, and complete.
- An APHIS endorsed international health certificate is not required.
- Dogs and cats must be vaccinated against rabies and must travel to French Guyana with a valid rabies vaccination certificate signed by a licensed veterinarian.
- The rabies vaccination must be given either:
- Within 30 days of travel for adult animals that did not have a lapse in their rabies vaccine coverage; or
- More than 30 days before travel for adult animals that had a lapse between rabies booster vaccinations; or
- More than 30 days before travel for animals vaccinated for the first time prior to travel;
- Each family is limited to three animals.
- Of the three animals, only one can be a puppy or kitten under 6 months of age;
- If your dog or cat cannot meet the conditions above, please contact French Guyana offices to determine if the pet is eligible to travel.
- An APHIS endorsed international health certificate is not required.
- Pet birds must travel with the following documents:
- A health certificate signed by a licensed veterinarian.
- No specific health certificate format is required.
- A written and signed statement from the pet bird owner stating they will not sell the bird(s). The pet bird owner is responsible for providing this document.
- A health certificate signed by a licensed veterinarian.
- Each family is limited to two birds for psittacine species (parrots) and ten birds for small species.
- Pet reptiles must travel with a health certificate issued by a USDA Accredited Veterinarian within 5 days of departure from the U.S.
- APHIS endorsement of the health certificate is not required.
- Each family is limited to two reptiles;
- The animals are not to be sold under any circumstances;
- Pet rabbits must travel with a health certificate issued by a USDA Accredited Veterinarian within 5 days of departure from the U.S.
- APHIS endorsement of the health certificate is not required
- The rabbits must have resided in the United States for at least 21 consecutive days immediately prior to issuance of the certificate.
- Each family is limited to three rabbits.
- Rodents include, but are not limited to: mice, rats, hamsters, gerbils, and guinea pigs.
- Pet rodents must travel with a health certificate issued by a USDA Accredited Veterinarian within 5 days of departure from the U.S.
- APHIS endorsement of the health certificate is not required
- The animals must have resided in the United States for at least 21 consecutive days immediately prior to issuance of the certificate.
- Each family is limited to three rodents.
For pet travel requirements not listed, APHIS has not been officially informed by the foreign country about the requirements for your pet’s travel. We recommend that you contact a government official of the country you are traveling to for more information.
