Aquatic Foreign and Emerging Diseases
Designed for foreign animal disease diagnosticians, this course trains participants to conduct foreign animal disease investigations when a World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH)-listed aquatic pathogen considered exotic to U.S. production systems is suspected.
Participants will learn necropsy techniques, diagnostic sampling, shipping of diagnostic samples, and using proper personal protective equipment as well as the VS Guidance 12001.5, Policy for the Investigation of Potential Foreign Animal Diseases/Emerging Disease Incidents (FAD/EDI) (274.92 KB). They will also be engaged in scenario-based exercises including a mock investigation in a realistic setting, observation of clinical animals, and performing necropsy in a controlled setting. This course aims to equip participants with the skills for assessing and handling a suspected incursion of transboundary aquatic animal disease from different geographical regions.
