Aquatic Animal Health Status Reviews

APHIS Veterinary Services conducts annual reviews to determine the health status of select aquatic animal pathogens of concern for the United States or regions within the United States.
List of Aquatic Animal Health Status Reviews
These reviews are based on the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) criteria as specified in Chapter 1.4. Aquatic Animal Disease Surveillance of the WOAH Aquatic Code. Data to support these reviews include annually aggregated and anonymous pathogen testing data collected using a collaborative process with private and public partners, as well as review of regulations, competencies, and oversight that together ensure the maintenance of basic biosecurity conditions.
The table below indicates the animal health review status for a given aquatic animal pathogen of concern as determined by APHIS Veterinary Services.

Glossary of Terms
The list below explains how APHIS uses these terms for the purposes of declaring freedom from selected listed pathogens of concern. Meanings are defined within the context of aquatic animal health status reviews.
- Annual pathogen testing data: Annually compiled aggregate and anonymous data provided by private and public entities conducting testing for aquatic animal pathogens
- Country freedom: The entire country—all 50 U.S. States—is free from the pathogen of concern.
- Demonstrated: Indicates the animal health review for the pathogen of concern was completed by APHIS.
- Listed pathogens of concern: Aquatic animal pathogens listed by WOAH Aquatic Code (Ch. 1.3), the National List of Reportable Animal Diseases, or both
- Maintained: Annual collection and review of testing data is ongoing to maintain freedom declaration.
- Private partners: Entities that are not publicly funded
- Presumed freedom: An official evaluation of freedom at the country or regional level has not been conducted. However, an absence of reports suggests the pathogen is not present.
- Public partners: Entities that are supported by Federal funding
- Regional freedom: Part of the country is free from the pathogen of concern.
- Review in progress: Compilation of data, report review, and APHIS approval for release is in process. The table will be updated once the review is complete.
- United States: All 50 U.S. States
- VS Aquaculture Health Team: The APHIS Veterinary Services (VS) Aquaculture Health Team is composed of members from several VS units, including Strategy and Policy, Diagnostics & Biologics, and Field Operations.
Presumed Freedom
APHIS designates presumed freedom status for the following pathogens of concern. For these pathogens, an official evaluation of freedom at the country or regional level has not been conducted. However, an absence of reports suggests the pathogen is not present:
- Crustaceans
- Decapod iridescent virus-1 (DIV-1)
- Taura syndrome virus (TSV)
- Yellowhead virus-1 (YHV-1)
- Enterocytozoon hepatopenaei (EHP)
- Necrotizing hepatopancreatitis (NHP)
- Macrobranchium rosenbergii nodavirus (white tail disease)
- Infectious myonecrosis virus (IMNV)
- Mollusks
- Abalone herpesvirus
