Dr. Fred L. Cunningham is a Supervisory Wildlife Research Biologist and Project Leader at the National Wildlife Research Center Starkville, Mississippi Field Station.

Research Project

The goal of this project is to develop an understanding of the economic impacts of damage inflicted on aquaculture production systems by cormorants, pelicans, wading birds, and waterfowl and develop tools and techniques for reducing that damage.

Current Research

  • Deterrent Methods in reducing loafing time of DCCO on floating oyster Cages. 
  • Seasonal habitat selection by American white pelicans.
  • Does climate influence spring migration departure probability of American White Pelicans.
  • Can fish eating birds transfer virulent Aeromonas hydrophila between catfish ponds?
  • Tissue tropisms of avian influenza 1 A viruses affect their spillover from wild birds to pigs.
  • Antibody production and genetic drift of H3N2 Influenza A virus in feral swine
