Requests for Official Copies of the CFIA Questionnaire for US Rendering Plants
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) will not accept simple photocopies of the original CFIA Questionnaire for US Rendering Plants (Annex 3). If you need an official copy of a completed/endorsed questionnaire to provide to a new or additional Canadian importer, please request one from the VS Service Center that inspected your facility. Please be sure to provide the VS Service Center with the name and address of the facility and the date the original questionnaire was endorsed. The VS Service Center will provide an official copy of the questionnaire, together with a standard cover letter stating “The attached Facility Questionnaire for the Importation from the USA of Products of Rendering Plants is an exact copy of the original issued by this office.” [No additional information can be included in this letter.]

Non-Ruminant Rendered Materials

Summary of Rendered Materials Acceptable for Import into Canada

I. Terrestrial animal origin
For rendered materials (processed animal proteins) to be eligible to export to Canada, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) must have recognized the rendering system of the exporting country as equivalent to Canada’s in meeting the requirements of the 2007 Ruminant Feed Ban.

At this time, the only countries meeting these criteria are:

  1. USA – non-ruminant rendered products are eligible.
  2. Australia, and New Zealand – ruminant and non-ruminant products are eligible.
  3. European Union:
    1. France, Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Spain – non-ruminant products are eligible.
    2. Romania – spray dried porcine plasma from the following exporting facility is eligible:
      • SC Smithfield Prod. SRL, Polona St. NO4, Timisoara City, Timis County, Romania
  4. United Kingdom - non-ruminant rendered products are eligible.
  • Terrestrial animal origin rendered products from other countries are not eligible for import into Canada.

II. Fish meal and other aquatic origin meals

The following countries and facilities are eligible to export fish meal to Canada:

  • All countries recognized by WOAH as negligible risk for BSE.
  • All producing facilities in Mauritania
  • The following producing facilities in Morocco:
    1. SOVAPEC, registration number 1980, port of Tan Tan, in the region of Guelmin-Es-Smara
    2. CIBEL II, registration number 1029, port of Agadir, in the region of Souss Massa Drâa
  • All producing facilities in France and the United Kingdom

NOTE: If the facility handles, receives, or stores rendered products from any country not listed above, then the facility must have in place a written separation protocol and demonstrate effective implementation as denoted in question 4 on the Annex 3 (633.92 KB).
