Diets for Laboratory or Zoo Animals for Export to Canada – Guidance
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) issues import permits for laboratory and zoo animal diets containing animal origin ingredients. Facilities producing diets containing animal origin ingredients intended for laboratory animals or zoo animals must be inspected by APHIS in order to export these commodities to Canada. If the facility has a current APHIS approval for raw or heat treated pet food for export to Canada, the facility will not need an additional APHIS inspection for laboratory or zoo animal feed. If the facility does not have a current APHIS approval for raw or heat treated pet food for export to Canada, the facility will need to be inspected using the Annex 1 inspection checklist. Once completed, the facility will submit the endorsed Annex 1 to CFIA in order to obtain an import permit for laboratory and/or zoo animal diets.
