APHIS Assistant District Director IL/IN District 4

Although most Illinois farmland is used for the production of grain, a wide variety of livestock is raised in the state as well. In fact, Illinois produced 1.6 billion pounds of pork in 2005, fourth most in the United States. It ranked 17th in the marketing of cattle and calves with production of 679 million pounds. Other agricultural animals raised in the state include alpacas, bison, buffalo, catfish, chickens, crayfish, dairy cattle, deer, ducks, elk, emus, goats, horses, hybrid striped bass, llamas, mink, minnows, rabbits, sheep, tilapia and turkeys. Production methods range from one ostrich in a pen to thousands of hogs in a confinement operation.
