USDA SEEKS COMMENT ON SITE-SPECIFIC ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT FOR THE INTERSTATE MOVEMENT OF HAWAIIAN GARBAGE
WASHINGTON, Jan. 19, 2010--The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) today released, for review and comment, a site specific environmental assessment related to the interstate movement of garbage from Hawaii to Washington state.
The environmental assessment includes APHIS’ analysis of the environmental impacts associated with, and alternatives to, the movement of municipal solid waste to three existing ports on the Columbia River via barge, as well as the transportation of the waste by truck or rail to the landfill. APHIS prepared the environmental assessment in response to a request to allow the interstate movement of garbage from Hawaii to Roosevelt Regional Landfill in Washington state.
APHIS regulates the importation and interstate movement of municipal solid waste in order to protect against the introduction of plant and animal diseases within the United States.
