Australia - Summary of Requirements for Animals
Australia's imports requirements for animals are available from the ICON database. At the search page, enter the following information:
Commodity Name - use appropriate name (i.e., cattle, bovine embryos, bovine semen, horses, etc.)
From Country - select "United States of America"
For end use - select "All End Uses"
Select the button "Search" and the database will retrieve the informationrequested
NOTE: The Australian Department of Agriculture has advised us that some dogs/cats have been treated for internal and external parasites with inappropriate products. As a general rule, oral external parasite treatments do not meet Australian import conditions and should therefore not be relied upon for exporting dogs and cats to Australia. The Department's website includes a table of acceptable parasite treatments for use in preparing dogs and cats for export to Australia - http://www.agriculture.gov.au/cats-dogs/step-by-step-guides/parasite-treatment. Australia advises all prospective exporters to consult this list prior to beginning export preparations. The list is not exhaustive but where an exporter wishes to use an unlisted product they should contact Australia first to check that it will be appropriate.
*Note: Effective 30 July 2014, the Immunofluorescent Antibody Titre (IFAT) testing for Ehrlichia canis antibodiesmust be conducted within the 45 days prior to export. Prior to 30 July 2014, E. canis IFAT tests were required to be performed on dogs within the 21 days prior to export to Australia. All other import conditions remain unchanged.
For species not listed, the requirements are not known. However, exporters wanting to ship livestock or germplasm whose requirements are not listed in the IREGS, should have the interested party (importer/buyer) in the country of destination apply for an Import Permit at the appropriate ministry. This Import Permit will most likely outline the specific requirements.
