Boots, clothing, and outdoor gear can carry pests back home. Insects, egg masses, snails, and slugs can hitch a ride—and soil stuck to your gear may contain plant diseases, microscopic worms, or weed seeds.
How To Prevent the Spread of Pests After Spending Time Outdoors
- Clean your gear before leaving an area. Brush off dirt, seeds, and plant material from boots, clothing, and equipment.
- Wash your boots after hiking. Remove any remaining soil or debris.
- Clean vehicle tires. Make sure tires are free of mud and soil before traveling.
Look for Cleaning Stations
Many trailheads have boot brush or rinse stations to help remove mud, seeds, and pests. Use them before and after your hike to avoid spreading invasive species between trails.
