APHIS Authorizes the Importation of Fresh Leaves and Stems of Glasswort for Consumption From Israel into the United States

Washington, D.C., April 21, 2026—The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) announced today that it will authorize the importation of fresh leaves and stems of glasswort (Salicornia europaea) for consumption from Israel into the United States.

After careful review, APHIS has determined that this commodity can be safely imported from Israel into the United States with appropriate mitigations. To prevent the introduction or spread of plant pests or noxious weeds, shipments must meet the following conditions:

  • Commercial consignments only
  • Phytosanitary certificate issued by the National Plant Protection Organization of Israel, certifying the consignment was inspected and found free from quarantine pests
  • Inspection at the U.S. port of entry

These requirements will be listed in the APHIS Agricultural Commodity Import Requirements (ACIR) database. This change takes effect upon publication in the Federal Register on April 21, 2026.
