Administrative Schedules

The administrative section of the APHIS records schedules has been revised. The General Records Schedules (GRS), issued by the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), contain mandatory dispositions for records common to most federal agencies.

The GRS has been incorporated in its entirety into the administrative section. As a result, some retention periods (dispositions) have changed, some expanded, and many new ones added. Please follow the dispositions on this web site and discard the outdated Records Management Handbook.

The administrative section has been reorganized to group similar records series together.

Please note the change in wording for the dispositions. The term "Originating Office" has been changed to "Recordkeeping Copies" because records may be treated as records in offices other than or in addition to the originating office.

Retentions for "All other offices" is no longer listed. All non-record copies are treated as informational unless separately scheduled. Informational copies can be destroyed when no longer needed, but cannot be retained beyond the retention period for the recordkeeping copies.
