Wildlife hazards at airports have become a major concern due to the potential for significant damage to aircraft and the threat posed to public health and safety. To address wildlife hazards at airports, WS personnel in Vermont contributed 1.579 staff years to provide assistance at 5 civil and 1 joint use airport in FY 2010. In addition, technical training was provided at 2 airports for 15 airport personnel.

Following a wildlife hazard assessment at a Vermont airport, WS conducted integrated gull harassment activities at a nearby landfill. The landfill served as a loafing and feeding area for gulls less than 5,000 feet from the airport. The integrated harassment and monitoring program has reduced gull presence at this airport by over 70 percent.
