Washington Financial Services Branch

The Washington Financial Services Branch (WFSB) provides accounting, financial systems, and reporting services for the Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS).

The Branch’s cadre of accountants and managers work collaboratively to produce financial statements that are materially correct for certification by our CFO who heads the Financial Management Division.

Our AMS Partner

AMS administers programs that facilitate the efficient and fair marketing of U.S. agricultural products, including food, fiber, and specialty crops. AMS also facilitates marketing of U.S. grain and related agricultural products by establishing standards for quality assessments, regulating handling practices, and managing a network of Federal, State, and private laboratories that provide impartial, user fee funded official inspection and weighing services.

Market News: For more than 90 years, AMS has provided current, unbiased price and sales information to assist in the orderly marketing and distribution of farm commodities.

Commodities: Supports the orderly and efficient marketing of commodities, (i.e. Cotton & Tobacco, Dairy, Fruit and Vegetable, Livestock, Poultry and Seed).

Grading and Inspection Services: AMS' quality grade standards, grading, certification, auditing, inspection, and laboratory analysis are voluntary tools that industry can use to help promote and communicate quality and wholesomeness to consumers.  Industry pays for these services.  (i.e. USDA grade on meats/eggs).

Section 32: Provides funding for the school lunch program in the form of commodities purchases.  The total amount including transfers to USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service is about $7-8 Billion.

Inspection & Weighing (User Fees): Provides a variety of inspection, weighing, and related services on grains, pulses, oilseeds, and processed and graded commodities. These services facilitate the efficient and effective marketing of U.S. grain and other commodities from farmers to domestic and international end users.

Packers & Stockyard: Promotes fair business practices and competitive environments to market livestock, meat, and poultry. This program fosters fair competition, and provides payment protection. It also guards against deceptive and fraudulent trade practices that affect the movement and price of meat animals and their products.
