Develop a Surveillance Plan: Case Definitions & Classification

An outbreak surveillance plan should include a clear case definition indicating how cases are classified. During an outbreak, the case definition provides standardized criteria for reporting cases, increases reporting accuracy, and distinguishes the disease of concern from other diseases. Case definitions are for epidemiological purposes only and should not be used to determine treatment.

Current case definitions are listed on the National List of Reportable Animals Diseases (NLRAD) website.
