Surveillance Plan Template: Sampling Plan - Sampling Frequency

This is a view of the template showing the suggested content of the Sampling Plan - Sampling Frequency section of an Outbreak Surveillance Plan. Instructions are in green and should be deleted from the final draft.

Frequency of Sampling

[Example narrative]
Table [insert number] provides the timeline and necessary samples to be collected in the various disease control Areas/Zones. [insert type of samples for each area/zone] will be collected in the [insert the respective areas/zones], unless clinical animals are identified. [insert type of samples] will be collected from any animals showing clinical signs consistent with [insert disease].

For this first round of sampling, the recommendations are to sample [insert number, e.g. three times] times per maximum incubation period in the Control Area, and [insert number, e.g. one time] time per maximum incubation period in the Surveillance Zone and Free Zone.  Ideally, sampling of premises in more distant areas/zones from the Control Area should be carried out before premises in closer proximity to this area are sampled.

All monitored premises MUST be sampled again prior to animal and animal product movement to meet permit requirements. Frequency of sampling to meet permit requirements is dependent upon frequency of animal and animal product movements (i.e ., daily movement requires daily sampling, infrequent movement requires sampling 3-4 days prior to movement). When not moving animals or animal products, monitored premises are treated the same as at-risk premises (relaxed testing requirements).

Table [insert number]. Frequency of sample collection in the disease control zones. [Note: Select daily or weekly sampling. Add or delete rows as needed for additional days/weeks or additional specimen types].
