If resources, including personnel, are limited, begin sampling those premises in disease control zones most distant from the Control Area and work inwards towards the center of the Infected Zone.
On any premises where the total number of [insert species] to be sampled is less than the total number of [insert species] present, selection of animals should proceed in the following order:
Priority category 1: Sick and dead [insert species]. All [insert species] on the premises should be visually examined; any that appear ill or lethargic should be sampled. It may be wise to handle and sample them after sampling other [insert species] on the premises.
Priority category 2: Newly introduced [insert species]. Whenever possible, at least one sample should be taken from every priority category of [insert species] present on a premises. If there are [insert species] from multiple owners on the same premises, samples should be collected from each owner’s [insert species] according to the above priority categories as if each owner’s [insert species] were on separate premises.
