APHIS Determines Fresh Figs from Peru Can be Safely Imported into the Continental United States

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has determined that commercial consignments of fresh fig fruit (Ficus carica) can be safely imported into the continental United States from Peru with safeguards in place.  APHIS scientists have conducted a pest risk assessment and determined the phytosanitary measures that will mitigate plant pests. 

These mitigation measures, such commercial consignments of fresh fig fruit will be required to be irradiated and inspected upon arrival to the United States and be accompanied by a phytosanitary certificate from the national plant protection organization (NPPO) of Peru, have been determined to sufficiently protect the United States from the entry of high risk pests.

APHIS developed and made available for public review and comment a Pest Risk Analysis and Risk Management Document on March 14, 2016 that examined the plant pest risks as well as strategies to manage them
This action will be effective on August 10, 2016.
