WASHINGTON, Nov. 21, 2021—The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) is authorizing importation of fresh mango fruit from Colombia into the United States. This commodity will be imported using safeguarding measures across the production continuum that growers, packers, and shippers put in place to minimize the risk of introducing plant pests and noxious weeds into the United States. APHIS previously made the pest risk analysis available for public review and comment.
APHIS published a pest risk analysis evaluating the risks associated with importing fresh mango fruit from Colombia into the United States. Based on the pest risk assessment, APHIS experts determined that fresh mango fruit from Colombia can be safely imported into the United States using one of the following APHIS approved-phytosanitary measures: 1.) Hot water treatment, or 2.) Irradiation treatment.
Additional, protective measures to mitigate risk require that places where the mango fruit is grown (production sites) must be registered with Colombia’s national plant protection organization (NPPO); only commercial consignments of mango fruit may be imported; all growers must follow requirements for fruit fly suppression; and the NPPO must monitor inspection and packing facilities.
