The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) is proposing to classify Canada as Level One for bovine tuberculosis and brucellosis. This proposed recognition is based on evaluations we have prepared in connection with this action, which we are making available for review and comment.
The Government of Canada requested that APHIS evaluate and classify Canada for bovine tuberculosis and brucellosis. APHIS prepared two evaluations which conclude that Canada meets the conditions to be classified as Level One for both bovine tuberculosis and brucellosis, supporting adding Canada to the web-based list of Level One regions for bovine tuberculosis and the web-based list of Level One regions for brucellosis. These evaluations are now available for review and comment for 60 days. The evaluations and environmental assessment are available at Regulations.gov or in our reading room. After reviewing any comments we receive, we will announce our final determination regarding classification of Canada with respect to bovine tuberculosis and brucellosis in a subsequent notice.
Bovine tuberculosis is a chronic bacterial disease (primarily of cattle) caused by the microorganism, Mycobacterium bovis. Brucellosis is a contagious, infectious, and communicable disease, primarily affecting cattle, bison, and swine, and is caused by bacteria of the genus Brucella. In its principal animal hosts, brucellosis causes loss of young through spontaneous abortion or birth of weak offspring, reduced milk production, and infertility.
