Why doesn't
the WS program just encourage bounties for
problem predators?
Bounties generally are not
effective in controlling wildlife damage for a
variety of reasons. No matter how carefully a
bounty program is regulated, killing of animals
not responsible for damage and fraudulent claims
are likely to occur. In addition, offending
animals may become shy of humans and traps,
eluding capture and continuing damage. Bounty
programs serve to stimulate general population
reduction efforts rather than focused problem
solving efforts. WS livestock protection efforts
are specifically targeted to resolve ongoing or
anticipated losses rather than the general
reduction of predator populations.
