What Is The Economic Benefit
Of The Wildlife Services (WS) Program In
California?
In today's world of budget cuts and trying to
"do more with less," taxpayers and government
officials often ask "what are we getting for our
money?" They want to know not only the
intangible benefits of the programs they're
paying for, but also the specific monetary
return on their investment. To answer these
questions, a team of economic specialists from
the National Wildlife Research Center in Ft
Collins, CO, conducted an economic assessment of
select benefits and costs of WS in California.
The assessment focused primarily on damage in
agricultural areas because urban wildlife damage
figures were not readily available. Funding for
the study was provided by the California
Department of Food and Agriculture – Vertebrate
Pest Control Research Advisory Committee.
Results of the study indicate that for every $1.00
CA counties invest in WS they save between $6.50
and $10.00 in wildlife damage and replacement
program costs.
