Classical Swine Fever, Croatia

Impact Worksheet, June 25, 2002

VS Logo

Summary: On June 20, 2002, Croatia reported to the OIE an outbreak of classical swine fever in Novska municipality, in the central part of the country. Croatia’s last reported outbreak of CSF was in July of 1999 in the western part of the country. An Impact Worksheet on this previous outbreak is available on this website. Little has changed since 1999 which would change the impact to the US swine herd due to CSF in Croatia. Stocks of pigs and production of pigmeat in 2001 are approximately equivalent to levels reported in 1999. US imports of prepared and/or cooked meat from swine have overall decreased significantly over the past several years. Passenger traffic from Croatia to the US remained very similar from 1997 to 2000. A short update to the 1999 impact worksheet is presented here.

Croatia’s production and trade in affected animals and animal products

Croatia had 1,234,000 pigs in 2001, which is less than 1% of world pig stocks. Croatia produced 70,000 metric tons of pigmeat in 2001, less than 1% of world production of pigmeat. In 2000, Croatia exported 3 live pigs and imported just over 6000.

Level of passenger traffic arriving in the US from Croatia

A total of 11,244 residents of Croatia arrived in the US in 2000. These accounted for 0.02% of all foreign residents entering the US, the same percentage as in 1997. There were no direct flights from Croatia to the US in 2000.

As part of USDA, PPQ’s Agriculture Quarantine Inspection Monitoring, 116 air passengers arriving in the US from Croatia in fiscal 2001 were sampled for items of agricultural interest. Nine (9) of these passengers, or 7.8%, were found to be carrying a total of 27 kg pork or unspecified meat products. None of the 9 passengers with relevant products reported plans to visit or work at a farm or ranch while in the US. In fiscal 1998, one of 62 passengers from Croatia was found to be carrying one kg of ham.
