Ecology of Emerging Viral and Bacterial Diseases in Wildlife
Understand the ecological role of wildlife in transmission and movement of emerging viral and bacterial pathogens causing livestock and human disease in order to develop diagnostic, surveillance, and management methods to minimize the impact of those diseases on agricultural production and human health.
Objective 1: Develop avian influenza detection methods.
Objective 2: Determine the role of wildlife in transmission of avian influenza.
Objective 3: Determine the factors involved in transmission of avian influenza to feral and domestic swine by wildlife.
Objective 4: Determine the wildlife-related factors involved in transmission of avian influenza to poultry operations.
Objective 5: Determine the role of wildlife in transmission of bacterial pathogens to livestock and dairy operations.
Objective 6: Provide support for Wildlife Services Operations and the National Wildlife Disease Program wildlife disease surveillance activities.
