APHIS DOE Biofuels Workshop

On June 16-17, APHIS conducted a workshop in coordination with the Department of Energy to explore the potential environmental impact of genetically engineered cellulosic biofuels, in Riverdale, MD. APHIS invited a wide range of stakeholders from academia, industry, and nongovernmental organizations with expertise in biofuel crops, environmental issues, and sustainable agriculture to discuss the potential environmental issues that may be associated with the wide-scale deployment of genetically engineered bioenergy crops. The speakers and participants explored a broad range of environmental topics such as climate change, carbon storage, soil quality, land use, invasiveness, water quality, biodiversity, and gene flow during the production of bioenergy crops.

APHIS will post the synopsis of the workshop on its website in the coming months.
