FAQs about NVAP

1.    How do I become accredited? (NO COST)

  1. Complete Initial Accreditation Training (IAT)          
  2. Complete an Orientation Program
  3. Be licensed or legally able to practice in the state where you are applying
  4. Indicate which Category of accreditation you wish to attain
    1. Category I – all animals except food and fiber species, horses, birds, farmed raised aquatics, all other livestock species and zoo animals that can transmit exotic diseases to livestock
    2. Category II – all animals
  5. Complete an application VS Form 1-36A
  6. Submit the original signed application to your NVAP Coordinator
  7. When approved you will receive an Accreditation certificate, an Accreditation Renewal Date (ARD) and a National Accreditation Number (NAN)


2.    What is the difference between accreditation and authorization?

  1. Accreditation is a one-time process which gives veterinarians the authority to administer APHIS regulations related to animal health in the original State of application.
  2. Authorization is required in each additional state in which you want to conduct accredited duties (contact the Veterinary Services (VS) NVAP Coordinator in each additional state). 


3.    May I do accredited work in any State in which I am licensed or legally able to practice?

  1. No, you must apply for authorization in each additional (from the original state of accreditation) State in which you wish to conduct accredited duties.
  2. Contact the VS NVAP Coordinator in each additional state for requirements.
  3. When approved, you will receive a letter indicating your Authorization in the additional state.


4.    How may I change accreditation categories?

  1. To change from Category I to Category II you must:
    1. Complete six units of APHIS Approved Supplemental training
    2. Submit a VS Form 1-36A  to your VS NVAP Coordinator.
  2. To change from Category II to Category I you must:
    1. Complete three units of APHIS Approved Supplemental training
    2. Submit a VS Form 1-36A  to your VS NVAP Coordinator.


5.    How do I renew my accreditation? NO COST

  1. You will receive a reminder of your renewal along with instructions.
    1. If you have a valid e-mail address on record-you will be sent e-mail reminders at six (6), three (3), and one (1) month intervals before your renewal.
    2. If you have an invalid or no e-mail address on record, we will send you a   reminder notice via USPS three (3) months before your renewal.
  2. You must complete your required APHIS-approved supplemental training (AAST) Six (6) AAST modules for Category II or three (3) AAST modules for Category I.
    1. AAST is available, free, on the NVAP Website www.aphis.usda.gov/nvap
    2. AAST is also available by ordering the CD or paper versions for the cost of production and mailing. Contact your local VS NVAP Coordinator.
    3. AAST is available as lectures at veterinary meetings and conventions
  3. Submit VS Form 1-36A
    1. Paper form; submit to your local VS NVAP Coordinator.
    2. On-line


6.     What happens if my accreditation expires because?

  1. I did not elect to participate (ETP) in the NVAP by October 2011.

  2. I did not complete my required AAST prior to my ARD.
    Contact your local VS NVAP Coordinator
  3. I did not apply for renewal.
    Contact your local VS NVAP Coordinator


7.    How do I change my contact information?

  1. Submit a VS Form 1-36A  to your local VS NVAP Coordinator
