Australia - Summary of Requirements

The following web site provides general information on importing into Australia: http://www.daff.gov.au/aqis/import

Protocols for exporting animals to Australia are available from ICON, AQIS's import conditions database By selecting the following link you will be leaving the APHIS web site.
At the search page enter the following information in the appropriate fields:

  • Commodity Name - use appropriate name (i.e., cattle, bovine embryos, bovine semen, horses, etc.)
  • From Country - select "United States of America"
  • For end use - select "All End Uses"
  • Select the button "Search" and the database will retrieve the information requested

Dogs/Cats - Information on exporting dogs and cats to Australia may be found at: http://www.daff.gov.au/aqis/cat-dogs

Effective April 1, 2011, a canine influenza virus (CIV) vaccine will be a mandatory requirement for export of dogs to Australia.

Note: The United States (excluding Hawaii) is considered a category 4 country. For Hawaii (category 2), enter "Hawaii" in "Select the country of export"


Equine Semen

For species not listed, the requirements are not known. However, exporters wanting to ship livestock or germplasm whose requirements are not listed in the IREGS, should have the interested party (importer/buyer) in the country of destination apply for an Import Permit at the appropriate ministry. This Import Permit will most likely outline the specific requirements.
