Agriculture is the number one industry in Mississippi and employs directly or indirectly about 30% of the state's work force. Mississippi is home for the The Dixie National Livestock Show and Rodeo, the largest of its kind east of the Mississippi River. There are over 42,000 farms in the state that may include either livestock or major crops such as forestry, cotton, soybean, rice, corn, hay, and horticulture. In addition, with 400 catfish operations and 101,000 water acres, Mississippi leads the nation in catfish production. The state is one of the nation's top poultry producers with over 800 million broilers.
Wildlife is abundant in Mississippi. The white-tailed deer population is estimated at 1.75 million, the second highest population in the nation and the highest on a deer-per-unit basis (density).
