2009 Vesicular Stomatitis Situation - Timeline and Background

On July 24, 2009, the last VSV positive premises in Texas was released from quarantine.

On June 22, 2009, NVSL in Ames, Iowa, confirmed the finding of vesicular stomatitis New Jersey serotype in a horse on a premises in DeBaca County, New Mexico. The affected horse had clinical signs and a CF titer of 1:320. This was the index case of VSV-NJ
in New Mexico in 2009.

On June 10, 2009, the National Veterinary Services Laboratory (NVSL) in Ames, Iowa, confirmed the finding of vesicular stomatitis New Jersey serotype in a single horse on a premises in Starr County, Texas. The affected horse had clinical signs and a fourfold
increase in CF titer on paired sera collected 7 days apart. This was the index case of VSV-NJ for the United States in 2009.

Prior to the positive case identified in June 2009, the last case of vesicular stomatitis in the United States was confirmed in Wyoming in September, 2006.
