Fiscal Year 2005 was the first year that Wildlife Services published data after updating its data base. Some data collected during FY 2005 was recorded in the old system, while other data was recorded in the new system. These two systems handle, display, and store data differently. In order to develop Annual Tables for FY 2005, it was necessary to integrate the two types of data. Only certain data sets were compatible and as a result WS decided to produce only four Annual Tables. Those reports are Tables 1, 3, 6, and 10 (both Table 10F and 10K).

Table 1 was unchanged from previous years.

Some disclaimers are necessary in order for our visitors to properly interpret data viewed in the tables. Note the following facts about the FY 2005 tables:

The new data system has the capacity to capture finer details about specific work of WS employees and as a result there are more options for how work will be recorded. As a result, both Tables 6 and 10 may reflect an increase or decrease in numbers of animals addressed by the use of any one method. As an example, because of different terminology associated with the use of certain dispersal methods represented in Table 6, it was necessary to lump several methods under BMNChem. Essentially, these are methods that have behavioral management of species as the objective and are non-chemical in nature, but do not fit with the method names or types in the other columns of the table. Likewise, in Table 10, because the new system features “Activities” as a data element, a number of activities in which a firearm or shooting device was used may have been lumped under the method termed “Shot” in Table 10.

A broader range of units of measure was selected in the new MIS system and therefore some data entries in Table 3 will show different ways of measuring a resource than was used in previous year’s tables. Future reporting of resource measurements may vary significantly from those used in past years.

Some names of species, resources, damage, and other elements in the records were changed in the new system to more accurately reflect current convention. The viewer may find some species of animals, or some resources with more than one name in the FY 2005 published tables. Efforts were made to normalize names. Newer names were converted to the names formerly used in previous year’s tables but some changes may escape detection. Such variances will usually be easily recognized. If you have problems determining what a name means, contact WS at 301/734-7921 and ask for clarification. You may also e-mail Robert.P.Myers@aphis.usda.gov.
