Research on Wildlife Disease
Management of Ungulate Disease and Damage
NWRC Research Project—Fort Collins, CO
Assessing the potential for bovine tuberculosis and chronic wasting disease transmission at the interface
between wild and domestic cervids, and developing methods to reduce transmission
and spread of the disease.
Feral
Hogs and Pseudorabies
NWRC Research Project—Gainesville, FL
Developing surveillance strategies and management tools to control pseudorabies
and other wildlife diseases that affect humans and livestock.
Rabies
NWRC Research Project—Fort Collins, CO
Studying the ecology of wildlife and evaluating risk factors that may be involved
with the transmission of rabies among wildlife and across landscapes and developing
methods and strategies that reduce or eliminate such transmission
Emerging Viral and Bacterial Diseases in Wildlife
NWRC Research Project—Fort Collins, CO
Understanding the role wildlife plays in diseases, developing epidemiological
models for health risk assessment, and developing spatially explicit (GIS)
risk assessments for agricultural biosecurity.
Surveillance and Emergency Response
The NWRC participates in wildlife disease monitoring and surveillance
in all regions of the United States. Wildlife Disease
Biologists (WDBs) act as Wildlife Services' first responders through the Surveillance
and Emergency Response System (SERS). Additionally, NWRC collaborates
with nongovernmental organizations and officials from other countries
to promote and assist in the development of wildlife disease monitoring
programs worldwide.
