SPECIAL INTEREST

HPAI sampling (July 2008)
During the week of July 14th, WDB Bodenstein and field staff from the Rhinelander district used
night-lighting techniques to capture, sample and band waterfowl for HPAI surveillance in
Wisconsin and to aid the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) with banding efforts. A total of 96 mallards, black ducks, and common mergansers were sampled within the two nights of work. This is the first time the technique had been utilized by this staff and both agencies were happy with its success.

Chronic wasting disease management meeting (July 2008)
WDB Bodenstein assisted the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources in a request to have Dr.
Kurt Vercauteren, of the National Wildlife Research Center, attend and present USDA WS research project overview to the Interagency Chronic Wasting Disease Science Team during the July meeting. Many worthwhile discussions were generated by the presentations and the information will aid Wisconsin in their management plans.
