Canada goose round-up helps to prevent air stirkes
in Reno (May 2009)
On May 27th, WDB Bowers conducted the annual Canada goose round-up meeting
at the Wildlife Services State office in Reno. The goose round-up has
been conducted annually in the Reno area since 1986 when an International
Airport in Reno requested assistance due to a continual threat of air
strikes with Canada geese. Strikes involving Canada geese have dropped
significantly at the airport since the initiation of the round-up. WDB
Bowers delivered a presentation to an above average crowd. Response
was very favorable and yet another successful round-up is expected by
all involved.

Cannon netting yields efficient capture of waterfowl
(June 2008)
WDB Zack Bowers worked in cooperation with the University of Nevada-Reno
(UNR) and the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) to trap
wood ducks in Churchill County, using a net cannon. These trapping instruments
allows the UNR to collect a large amount of data in short amount of
time and with minimal handling of the ducks. During the trapping effort,
WDB Bowers collected 17 oral + cloacal samples for NWDP HPAI sampling.
