SPECIAL INTEREST

Maryland still negative for chronic wasting disease (2008)
WDB Emanueli collected two chronic wasting disease samples (CWD) from whitetail deer as part of a direct control project. These samples will be provided to the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) deer project leaders to be included with their statewide CWD surveillance efforts. MDNR reports that 983 whitetail deer have been tested since the start of the 2007/2008 hunting season and all have been negative for CWD. This brings the total to over 4,600 deer tested negative over the past six years in Maryland.

Maryland submits samples from nutria for tularemia (2008)
Wildlife Services trappers collected samples from 10 nutria for submission to CDC for tularemia testing. To date, all samples have tested negative.
