Threatened and Endangered Species Protection |
An “endangered” species is one that is in danger of extinction throughout all or a significant portion of its range. A “threatened”species is one that is likely to become endangered in the foreseeable future. |
APHIS WS threatened and endangered (T&E) species work is based on partnerships with the US Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS), State wildlife management agencies, organizations, landowners, and others.
|
- During FY 2009, APHIS WS work contributed to the conservation of 148 threatened and endangered species: birds (47 species), plants (46), mammals (26), reptiles (9), fish (9), bivalves (1), mollusks (1), mussels (3), insects (2), and amphibians (4).
- WS T&E activities were conducted in 34 states, Guam and Cuba.
- Of the 148 listed species conserved by WS, 35 species are State listed only and 113 species were Federally listed (including some that were also State listed).
- Nearly $9.9 million in funds were expended by WS on T&E conservation during FY 2009.
