Wildlife/ aircraft strikes cause more than $625 million in damage to U.S. civil aviation annually.  To address wildlife hazards at airports, WS personnel in New York contributed 3.496 staff years to provide assistance at 10 civil and 6 joint use airports in FY 2010 for a total of 16 airports.  In addition, technical training was provided at 12 airports for 123 airport personnel.  Some training programs were joint ventures with the New York Airport Management Association and the New York State Bureau of Aviation.  WS has conducted wildlife hazard assessments or site visits at all 24 certificated airports in New York plus military installations and general aviation airports.
