APHIS Publishes Notice of Quarantine Areas for Pale Cyst Nematode to the Federal Register

Summary

This announcement codifies the USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) regulatory changes to quarantine areas in Idaho to prevent the spread of pale cyst nematode (PCN, Globodera pallida), a major pest of potato crops in cool-temperature areas. PCN also damages tomatoes, eggplants, peppers, tomatillos, and some weeds. Unmanaged infestations can cause potato yield loss ranging from 20 to 70 percent. The spread of this pest in the United States could result in a loss of domestic or foreign markets for U.S. potatoes and other commodities. Quarantine changes are outlined on the APHIS website at http://www.aphis.usda.gov/planthealth/pcn and will publish in the Federal Register on September 16, 2016 at https://www.regulations.gov/docket?D=APHIS-2016-0047
