2010 Vesicular Stomatitis Situation
Timeline and Background

On July 23, 2010, Arizona was removed from VSV-positive state status by having completed a 21-day countdown since the release of the last positive premises with no additional cases identified.

On May 26, 2010, the National Veterinary Services Laboratories (NVSL) in Ames, Iowa, confirmed the finding of vesicular stomatitis New Jersey serotype in three horses on a single premises in Cochise County, Arizona. The affected horses had clinical signs and a four-fold increase in CF titer on paired sera collected 7 days apart. This was the index case of VSV-NJ for the United States in 2010.

Prior to the positive case identified in May 2010, the last case of vesicular stomatitis in the United States was confirmed in New Mexico in July 2009.
