Vesicular Stomatitis Situation Report
August 27, 2006

New Information

This is the first of a series of situation reports that will provide information on the current 2006 outbreak of vesicular stomatitis (VS) in the United States until the outbreak ends. Situation report summaries will be provided each week. Each report will cover the period from Monday through Sunday for that week. For example, this report covers the reporting period August 21 to 27, 2006.

On August 17, 2006, the index vesicular stomatitis case for the nation was reported (see background section below). Since that report, three new equine vesicular stomatitis positive premises were identified in Wyoming. One of the new premises was located in a new Wyoming county, Converse.

Samples from the virus isolate obtained from the index case were provided by the National Veterinary Services Laboratories in Ames, IA to Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Agricultural Research Services (ARS) scientists on Plum Island, NY. The DHS and ARS scientists were able to sequence and conduct a phylogenetic analysis of the virus showing a close relationship to that of the vesicular stomatitis virus isolates from the 2005 outbreak in the western United States. Specifically, the current isolate is closely related to viruses isolated from animals in Montana and Wyoming in 2005. Therefore, they conclude that this was likely an overwintering of the 2005 vesicular stomatitis virus in that region.
