Notice If you have any questions or concerns regarding these regulations for exporting animals or animal products to a foreign country, you should contact the APHIS-VS Area Office in the State from which the animals or products will be exported. Animal Products to Brazil Brazil has announced that the requirement for health certificates/permits of animal products to be "consularized" no longer exists. This change means that a health certificate issued by the competent authority of the country of origin of the animal product is sufficient. Brazil has recently implemented a requirement that an importer must obtain a valid import permit before attempting to import live animals, animal genetics, microorganisms, animal products or other biological material of animal origin not intended to be used for animal or human consumption. Brazil currently prohibits the importation of unprocessed (non-heat treated) poultry products from the United States. In addition, effective August 11, 2009, the government of Brazil’s Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply (MAPA) has determined that poultry and poultry products that have not been heat treated from a 6-mile zone around a focus of low pathogenic notifiable avian influenza in Meeker County, Minnesota, poses a risk for avian influenza and may not be certified for export. While this prohibition continues, export certification for any U.S.-origin unprocessed poultry commodities will require an additional certification statement that the product does not originate in a 10-km radius zone around the reported focus in Minnesota. Exporters should have their importers verify that processed products containing poultry ingredients meet the requirements of the government of Brazil prior to export. The previous prohibitions on zones in the States of Arkansas and Kentucky have been lifted.
