International Cooperation

Because of the importance of Opuntia to Mexico, their government’s plant protection department (SAGARPA) is participating as a partner in the research and control efforts for C. cactorum in the US, including providing resources. The North American Plant Protection Organization (NAPPO) helped facilitate a joint cooperative SAGARPA – USDA Cactus Moth Program launched in 2006 with the funding of research by the USDA-Agriculture Research Service and helping to establish an office and secure personnel resources in the panhandle of Florida.

USDA and US Geological Survey has also been sharing data and in collaborative discussions with CONABIO in Mexico.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), headquartered in Vienna Austria, has funded research and actively assisted in education efforts in both Mexico and the US., including the following study:
