In response to the dynamic port, trade and safeguarding environment that is associated with some of the highest levels of risk for plant and animal health, APHIS-PPQ is establishing a state-of-the-art Agricultural Quarantine Inspection (AQI) Development Laboratory that will provide leadership in AQI treatment technology.

Vision

The vision is to provide world leadership in the development of phytosanitary measures and port technologies to protect American agriculture and natural environments from invasive alien species.

Activities at the AQI Lab will include: methods development/applied research, technology transfer, development of scientific expertise regarding pest exclusion, design of risk management systems, development of international AQI information networks, development of quarantine treatments, technical support for the treatment manual, development of methyl bromide alternatives, development of inspection methods for PPQ and DHS-Customs Agricultural Inspectors, and supporting validation and certification for domestic and foreign treatment facilities in both pre-clearance and domestic programs.
