Joint APHIS/CBP Task Force on the AQI Mission

Conference Notes and Additional Information

Purpose – to address issues from the 2007 OIG, GAO and Congressional reports as well as concerns identified in the May 2007 Stakeholder Meeting in Riverdale MD regarding the health of the agriculture mission as shared by APHIS and CBP.

Invited participants – included members of the Partnership Council, NASDA, NPB, State Veterinarians, and over 50 key industry stakeholders. Both agencies will be represented with key headquarters, regional, and field staff, as well as State Plant Regulatory Officials from the states where Customs & Border Protection Director of Field Operations are located.

Agenda – the meeting featured an update on accomplishments over the last year from executives of both agencies, including the Secretary of Homeland Security and Secretary of Agriculture, Under Secretaries and Department Administrators and Commissioners. Joint presentations of front line success stories were given by field staff. Breakout sessions were conducted to exchange information and develop ideas on topics including communications with the States, communications with industry, quality assurance, pest risk committees, and joint strategic planning. The final day served as meeting time for PPQ, CBP, SPRO’s, representatives of NASDA, NPB, USAHA, Task Force and Partnership Council members to review outcomes, recommendations and identify the next steps.
