Jim Rogers (301) 734-0603 MEXICAN STATE OF NAYARIT PROPOSED AS FREE OF CLASSICAL SWINE FEVER--USDA CORRECTION TO PREVIOUS NOTICE WASHINGTON, March 6, 2007--The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service issued a correction to a proposed rule that would add the Mexican state of Nayarit to the list of regions considered free of classical swine fever (CSF). The original proposal was corrected to read: “In addition to changing the CSF status of Nayarit, the proposal would also add Nayarit to the list of CSF-free regions that must meet certain certification requirements to ensure their freedom from CSF in order to export live swine, pork and pork products to the United States.” The previous version said “CSF-affected.” The CSF-free status comes after careful scrutiny and site inspection by USDA-APHIS, and can often carry conditions. In this instance, Nayarit borders countries with CSF. In order to be considered CSF-free Nayarit must meet APHIS certification requirements to ensure the pork is from Nayarit. If accepted, this proposal would allow Nayarit to export fresh and frozen pork to the United States with proper classification. The CSF-affected status can mean two different things. First, that status is given to countries known to have CSF and, second, it is used to label regions where the CSF status is unknown. The original proposed rule was published in the Jan. 31 Federal Register.
