USDA ANNOUNCES NO SIGNIFICANT IMPACT ON SOLID WASTE MOVEMENT FROM HAWAII TO WASHINGTON STATE

WASHINGTON, Dec. 29, 2006—The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service today found movement of municipal solid waste from Hawaii to a Washington state landfill will have no significant impact regarding the possibility of introducing plant or animal diseases.

Prepared in response to a request to allow the interstate movement of garbage from Hawaii to the Roosevelt Regional Landfill in Klickitat County, Wash., the assessments document APHIS’ review and analysis of potential pest risks, associated environmental impacts and alternatives to the action

Based on its finding of no significant impact, the companies that have petitioned APHIS can sign compliance agreements with the states of Hawaii and Washington and begin moving the regulated garbage

The importation and interstate movement of municipal solid waste is regulated by APHIS in order to protect against the introduction of plant and animal diseases within the United States.

This notice is published in the December 28 Federal Register.
