THE ANIMAL AND PLANT HEALTH INSPECTION SERVICE NAMED 2006 GOVERNMENT COMPUTER NEWS GALA WINNER

WASHINGTON, Oct. 10, 2006--The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service is 1 of 10 government agencies named a 2006 Government Computer News (GCN) Gala Award winner for its outstanding use of information technology in developing a new ePermitting system.

APHIS was selected from nearly 150 candidates and recognized for its sustained contribution and innovative use of technology in the field of government technology.

“We are extremely appreciative and honored to receive the 2006 Gala Award from GCN,” said APHIS Administrator, W. Ron DeHaven.  “APHIS’ work on the ePermits system exemplifies the values and goals of a forward-thinking organization, and I am very proud to be a part of it.”

The ePermits system, which is being released in multiple phases, is a Web-based tool that allows the electronic filing, processing and tracking of permit applications.  Submitting applications and receiving permits via the Internet will save customers a tremendous amount of time and effort.

In addition to online applications, ePermits also features a payment engine capability so individuals can pay permit application fees by credit card, when applicable, as part of the on-line process.  This feature is designed and operated in a way that ensures the privacy and confidentiality of applicant information.

Additional information about ePermits is available online at http://www.aphis.usda.gov/permits.
