USDA Announces 2012 Veterinary Accreditation Renewal Process

WASHINGTON, May 24, 2012--The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) today announced that the National Veterinary Accreditation Program (NVAP) will begin the veterinary accreditation renewal process this summer for some accredited veterinarians.

In July 2012, veterinarians whose accreditation renewal dates (ARD) are in January 2013 will begin receiving email reminders of their upcoming ARD. Veterinarians who do not have email addresses on record with the NVAP will receive reminders by mail. If accreditation is not renewed by the ARD, those veterinarians will no longer be authorized by USDA to perform duties which require accreditation.

All accredited veterinarians must ensure that their contact information on file is up-to-date. If your contact information has changed, please submit VS Form 1-36A to the Area Office which oversees the state where you practice.  The form, a directory of Area Offices, and more useful information may be found at http://www.aphis.usda.gov/animal_health/vet_accreditation/
accred_vets.shtml.

The NVAP is a voluntary program.  Veterinarians who participate in the NVAP must work according to the federal standards for accredited veterinarians.  Participation in the NVAP allows private sector veterinarians to offer services to their clients such as certifying animal and herd health and domestic and international movement of animals.

With Agriculture Secretary Vilsack’s leadership, APHIS works tirelessly to create and sustain opportunities for America’s farmers, ranchers and producers. Each day, APHIS promotes U.S. agricultural health, regulates genetically engineered organisms, administers the Animal Welfare Act, and carries out wildlife damage management activities, all to safeguard the nation’s agriculture, fishing and forestry industries. In the event that a pest or disease of concern is detected, APHIS implements emergency protocols and partners with affected states and other countries to quickly manage or eradicate the outbreak. To promote the health of U.S. agriculture in the international trade arena, APHIS develops and advances science-based standards with trading partners to ensure America’s agricultural exports, valued at more than $137 billion annually, are protected from unjustified restrictions.
