USDA Makes Permit Inspection Findings Available Online

WASHINGTON, June 13, 2011--The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) will begin posting website notices on findings of pharmaceutical, industrial and phytoremediation permit inspections.

“We are committed to conducting our activities in the most transparent manner possible, and we know that historically this information has generated interest under the Freedom of Information Act, so we’re making it available,” said Michael Gregoire, deputy administrator for APHIS' biotechnology and regulatory services program.

APHIS has specific requirements for entities conducting field tests or moving genetically engineered organisms that produce compounds intended for industrial or pharmaceutical use. APHIS also verifies that an entity is compliant with these permit requirements by inspecting fields, equipment and other facilities. The findings of the agency’s compliance inspections are then submitted to the entity in a written summary and APHIS is now making these summaries available to the public.

The inspection findings can be found on the APHIS website at www.aphis.usda.gov/brs/ph_permits.html. The information will appear under the heading “Notice of Inspection Findings” in a table that provides information on APHIS' environmental release permits for plants engineered to produce compounds intended for pharmaceutical or industrial use. Confidential business and other exempt information will be redacted.
