ESLS will provide five types of distinctly different coaching services, utilizing a combination of internal and external coaches. The type of coaching services required will be determined on an individual case-by case basis in consultation with an Executive Consultant from ESLS. These five types of coaching services are available to all APHIS leaders:
- Leadership Coaching - ESLS and External
- APHIS Internal Coaching
- Developmental Coaching
- Situational Coaching
- Transitional Coaching
Transitional Coaching – Transitional coaching focuses on helping leaders adapt to a new work environment. This may include:
- Coming in new to the Agency
- Moving from a staff role to a leadership position
- Transferring from one organizational unit to another
- Relocating to a new geographic location
As people make these job and career changes, they are more likely to focus on the immediate tasks of the position, rather than working through the internal, less tangible aspects of the transition itself. ESLS has developed a systematic approach for supporting leaders during these times of changes and transitions.
“It’s not the changes that do you in, it’s the transitions.”
-- William Bridges
“The transition from the current state to the future state have traditionally been underestimated…and inadequately addressed.”
-- Bill Veltrot, Exxon
How does a Leader initiate the Coaching Process?
Individual leaders within APHIS are encouraged to contact ESLS for coaching support. The Executive Consultants will work with individuals to determine the appropriate coaching resource; additionally ESLS may recommend and initiate coaching as well.
Transitional Coaching - can come about from several ways.
- ESLS staff has a method for monitoring movement at Grade 14 and above. An email message offering our services will be sent to new leaders at this level within the first few weeks of their coming on board or being moved to/within these levels.
- A leader may contact ESLS (call main number or any Executive Consultant) to ask for personal assistance with things like: taking on a new assignment, merging two groups together, incorporating new members to the group; help with establishing linkages and support systems within the Agency, etc.
- A leader may contact ESLS (main number or any Executive Consultant) to make us aware of an upcoming change which may warrant transitional support; for example: changes in leadership, potential changes and reorganizations within their area, Agency driven priorities and directions, etc.
